Craig County Clerk Office

The Craig County Clerk's office is at 210 W. Delaware Ave., Room 204 in Vinita. Karen Dawes serves as county clerk. You can reach the office at (918) 256-2507. The clerk handles land records, marriage licenses, and court filings. Birth certificates are not stored here. All Oklahoma birth records are managed by the Oklahoma State Department of Health Vital Records Service.

The clerk's office still plays a role in birth record matters. Marriage licenses, name change orders, and adoption court papers all pass through the Craig County courthouse. These documents can be important when you need to establish a family connection for a birth certificate request. If you need to prove that you are the parent, spouse, or child of the person on the record, the local clerk may have supporting documents that help.

Start with OK2Explore. This free search tool from the state health department covers Craig County births more than 20 years old. You can search by name, date, county, or sex. The index is updated each month. Results show basic information like name and date of birth, but you will not see the full certificate. A certified copy must be ordered separately for legal use.

If your search turns up nothing, try alternate name spellings or a wider date range. Old records can have errors due to poor handwriting or wrong information given at the time of birth. Craig County was part of the Cherokee Nation before statehood, and some older records may be found through tribal or territorial archives rather than the state database. You can email AskOK2Explore@health.ok.gov for technical help.

The Oklahoma State Courts Network is free and covers court cases in Craig County. While it does not hold birth records directly, you can search for adoption cases, paternity filings, and name change petitions. These case types can lead to changes on a birth certificate.

Note: Craig County is in the 12th Judicial District, and court cases are searchable on OSCN by county and case type.

Mail is the cheapest method at $15 per copy. Download the official Birth Certificate Request Form from the OSDH website. Complete the form, attach a photocopy of your ID, and include a check or money order for $15 made out to OSDH. Send everything to: Vital Records Service, PO Box 248964, Oklahoma City, OK 73124-8964. Mail orders take about four weeks. Do not include cash in the envelope.

Hours are 12:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., Monday through Friday. You need to order ahead. Walk-in service is no longer offered at any location.

Note: Delayed registrations, amendments, and paternity cases require a $40 initial fee that includes one certified copy.

Who Can Request Craig County Birth Records

Oklahoma does not treat birth records as public documents. Under Title 63, Section 1-323, only certain people can get a certified copy. That includes the person on the record, a parent on the certificate, a legal guardian with court documentation, or an attorney with signed authorization. Spouses, grandparents, and adult children can also get copies if they show proof of relationship and provide authorization from the person on the certificate.

Every request must come with a valid photo ID. Accepted types include driver's licenses, passports, military IDs, and tribal photo IDs. Send a photocopy of your ID only. If you use two secondary IDs rather than one primary form, the state will only mail the certificate to the address listed on your identification.

Birth records older than 125 years are open to anyone. You still need to fill out the application, pay the fee, and provide identification. For Craig County births during the territorial period, the Oklahoma Historical Society has relevant archives. FamilySearch also has a helpful page about Oklahoma vital records for genealogy purposes.
